Rubber Group Told to End Illegal Checkpoint Fee Collection, Agriculture Ministry Says

MONROVIA, Liberia – August 13, 2026 — The Ministry of Agriculture has warned a group identifying itself as the National Rubber Brokers and Farmers Union of Liberia to immediately stop allegedly intercepting vehicles transporting unprocessed rubber and collecting unauthorized fees at checkpoints across the country.

The Ministry said it had received reports that members of the group were stopping vehicles carrying unprocessed rubber and demanding payments from transporters.

The Ministry stressed that the group has no legal authority to stop vehicles or collect fees from farmers, processors, traders, or transporters without proper authorization. It also called on security personnel assigned to checkpoints not to support or facilitate such activities.

According to the Ministry, Liberia’s rubber industry remains a vital pillar of the country’s agricultural economy, providing employment, supporting exports, and sustaining the livelihoods of thousands of farmers and businesses.

The Ministry warned that unauthorized fees and the obstruction of legitimate trade increase the cost of doing business, place additional burdens on stakeholders throughout the rubber value chain, and threaten the sector’s growth and competitiveness.

Officials said the Ministry will continue collaborating with relevant government agencies to ensure a lawful, transparent, and business-friendly environment for the production, processing, transportation, and marketing of rubber across Liberia.

The Ministry also encouraged farmers, processors, traders, and transporters who encounter unauthorized checkpoints or illegal demands for payment to report such incidents to the appropriate authorities or contact the Ministry of Agriculture at 0770-477-454.
