UL Student Nathaniel Z.T. Sieh Warns Against Disrupting Academic Activities, Backs Ongoing Reforms

Monrovia, Liberia – University of Liberia (UL) student Nathaniel Z.T. Sieh has issued a strong appeal against any attempts to disrupt academic activities at the nation’s premier institution, warning that interruptions to the academic calendar undermine the future of thousands of students striving to complete their education.

In a statement titled, “A Caveat to Obstructionists Who Want to Stop Learning Activities at the University of Liberia,” Sieh expressed concern over what he described as efforts by some individuals, including certain faculty members and other provocateurs, to interfere with the normal conduct of classes and learning.

According to him, many Liberian students have sacrificed significant time, resources, and effort to pursue higher education, and any deliberate disruption of academic activities threatens their aspirations and the country’s human capital development.

“We are no longer getting younger in this country. We must encourage people with positive minds who are contributing to the growth of our university,” Sieh said, urging all stakeholders to place the interests of students above personal or political differences.

Sieh stressed that the University of Liberia should remain a center of academic excellence where learning takes precedence over conflict. He noted that preserving a stable academic environment is essential to producing competent graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to Liberia’s national development.

The UL student also raised concerns about the quality of instruction in some classrooms, arguing that ineffective teaching methods and non-informative lectures leave students inadequately prepared for the demands of the job market and professional life. He called on lecturers to embrace high academic standards and ensure that students receive quality instruction.

He further appealed to students, faculty members, administrators, and other stakeholders to work collaboratively in protecting the university’s academic integrity and advancing reforms aimed at strengthening higher education.

Sieh praised University of Liberia President Dr. Layli Maparyan for what he described as her commitment to improving the institution’s academic environment. He said the university has experienced more organized and predictable academic semesters under her leadership, with fewer interruptions to teaching and learning.

He also commended Dr. Maparyan for promoting open dialogue between students and the administration through engagement platforms that allow students to raise concerns, offer recommendations, and participate in discussions about the university’s future.

According to Sieh, sustained collaboration among students, faculty, and administrators is critical to building a stronger institution capable of competing with leading universities across Africa.

He expressed optimism that, with continued reforms, disciplined academic management, and the collective support of all stakeholders, the University of Liberia can enhance its reputation as a center of excellence and produce graduates equipped to meet both national and international challenges.
