Monrovia, Liberia – ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has awarded scholarships to 24 Liberian students to pursue Master’s degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through its Advanced Academic Scholarship Program (AAASP).
The scholarship recipients, drawn from Nimba, Bong, and Grand Bassa counties, were recognized during a farewell ceremony held Friday at the Ministry of Mines and Energy before departing for their respective countries of study.
Addressing the gathering, AML Chief Executive Officer Michiel Vandermerme urged the students to pursue academic excellence and return to Liberia equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support national development. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s human resource capacity in line with its Mineral Development Agreement.
Government officials also encouraged the scholars to remain focused on their studies and serve as ambassadors for Liberia abroad. In response, the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to AML and the Government of Liberia, describing the selection process as transparent, competitive, and based strictly on merit.
Since its launch in 2012, the Advanced Academic Scholarship Program has benefited 99 Liberian students, with 96 pursuing studies in 16 countries across four continents.
From 2012 to 2025, AML invested more than US$2.84 million to cover tuition, travel, accommodation, and other educational expenses, reinforcing its commitment to developing Liberia’s future workforce.
