Assistant Labour Minister Criticizes University of Liberia President Over Campus Conditions

Monrovia – Assistant Minister for Manpower Development at the Ministry of Labour, Emmanuel K. Barnes, has criticized University of Liberia President Dr. Layli Maparyan over what he described as the institution’s continued emphasis on cosmetic improvements rather than addressing longstanding infrastructure and student welfare concerns.

In a public statement, Barnes, who identified himself as both an alumnus of the University of Liberia and a current graduate student, questioned the decision to publicize newly painted classroom chairs as a significant achievement. He argued that the chairs remain uncomfortable despite being repainted and said such improvements should not be presented as a major milestone.

Barnes said graduate students continue to endure difficult classroom conditions and noted that undergraduate students face similar challenges. He urged the University administration to prioritize meaningful investments that improve the learning environment.

Referring to Dr. Maparyan, Barnes said the University President should focus on delivering the responsibilities entrusted to her and avoid highlighting what he considers minor upgrades that do not adequately address the needs of students.

Dr. Maparyan has not publicly responded to Barnes’ remarks.
