FISH TOWN, River Gee County – River Gee County Superintendent Hon. Mike T. Swengbe has joined government officials, health experts, and development partners in Monrovia for a three-day National Health Review Conference aimed at advancing Universal Health Insurance to improve access to quality maternal and newborn healthcare across Liberia.
Convened by the Ministry of Health under the theme, “Introducing Universal Health Insurance in Liberia: Financing Quality Maternal and Newborn Care for All,” the conference is assessing progress within the health sector, addressing critical challenges, and developing practical strategies to accelerate the country’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage.
The national gathering has brought together Superintendents and County Health Officers from all 15 counties, lawmakers, Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, development partners, and healthcare professionals to discuss sustainable solutions for strengthening Liberia’s healthcare system.
Ahead of the conference, Superintendent Swengbe described Universal Health Insurance as a transformative initiative that has the potential to improve healthcare access for vulnerable families, particularly women and children in rural communities such as River Gee County.
Discussions during the conference are focused on sustainable financing for Universal Health Insurance, improving maternal and newborn healthcare services nationwide, addressing shortages of healthcare workers, essential medicines, and infrastructure, and strengthening collaboration among county administrations, the Legislature, and international development partners.
River Gee County’s delegation, led by Superintendent Swengbe and County Health Officer Dr. Pauline Weah, is presenting the county’s healthcare priorities, highlighting progress in maternal health services and immunization coverage, while drawing attention to persistent challenges, including inadequate staffing, poor road connectivity, and inconsistent medical supply chains.
The River Gee County Administration has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Health and development partners to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare and to guarantee that every mother and newborn receives the care they deserve, regardless of where they live.
