MONROVIA, Liberia – Sagacious Gbanwulue has issued a public apology after a recent statement sparked criticism from members of the Sapo community, who interpreted his remarks as a condemnation of the entire tribe.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Gbanwulue clarified that his comments were not intended to target the Sapo people as a whole but were directed specifically at individuals advocating for the creation of a new county on the grounds that the Sapo people have been marginalized.
“As someone of Sapo heritage myself, I would never intentionally speak negatively about my own people,” Gbanwulue stated. “My comments were directed only at those advancing that particular position. Unfortunately, I failed to make that distinction clear, and my words were widely interpreted as referring to the entire Sapo Tribe. For that, I take full responsibility.”
He expressed deep regret for the misunderstanding and extended a heartfelt apology to anyone who felt offended or hurt by his remarks.
“From the bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry for the misunderstanding and for any pain my statement may have caused,” he said, adding that he deeply respects the Sapo community and values the many friendships and relationships he has within it.
Gbanwulue also thanked those who engaged with his statement, regardless of whether they agreed or disagreed, describing the public response as valuable and expressing hope that future discussions on issues affecting the Sapo community would be conducted with mutual respect, understanding, and constructive dialogue.
The apology follows public reactions to his earlier comments and comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding calls by some individuals for the creation of a new county.
