LERC Lowers Electricity Costs for Customers in Four Counties

New tariff cuts the cost of power by 12 percent, while single-phase connection fees drop from US$110 to US$40.

MONROVIA, Liberia — Electricity consumers in parts of southeastern Liberia are set to pay less for power following a decision by the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) to reduce electricity tariffs and new connection fees for customers served by LIBENERGY.

The revised rates, announced on November 3, cover LIBENERGY’s licensed service areas in Maryland, Grand Gedeh and River Gee counties, as well as Tappita in Nimba County.

Under the new pricing structure, the electricity charge has fallen from US$0.25 to US$0.22 per kilowatt-hour, representing a 12 percent reduction.

The Commission has also reduced the cost of obtaining a new single-phase electricity connection from US$110 to US$40, a decrease of approximately 64 percent.

The changes took effect on November 1, 2026, and will remain applicable through October 31, 2029.

LERC Chairman Claude J. Katta said the new rates are mandatory and instructed LIBENERGY to implement the approved charges across all areas covered by its operating licence.

He said the Commission would monitor the company’s compliance to ensure consumers benefit from the reductions.

Katta described affordable electricity as an important factor in improving living conditions and supporting economic development, particularly in communities where access to reliable power remains limited.

He said reducing connection costs could make it easier for more households to access electricity, while lower tariffs could provide some relief to small businesses and other commercial users.

The Commission said the adjustments reflect its regulatory responsibility to ensure that electricity services are accessible and affordable while promoting improved service delivery.

The decision also comes amid broader efforts by the Liberian government to expand electricity access and address the cost of power across the country.

LERC has urged existing and prospective LIBENERGY customers to take note of the revised charges and contact the Commission through its regional office or official communication channels for further clarification.
