Monrovia, Liberia — Newly inaugurated President of the Reporters Association of Liberia (RAL), J.H. Webster Clayeh, has pledged an ambitious reform agenda focused on strengthening professionalism, improving journalists’ welfare, enhancing accountability, and restoring public confidence in Liberia’s media.
Delivering his inaugural address at the Association’s 7th Inaugural Ceremony, Clayeh described his election as the beginning of a new era for the organization under the theme, “Shaping the Future of Liberian Journalism Through Inclusion, Welfare and Reform.” He said the new leadership is committed to building a more inclusive, transparent, and responsive Association that places the interests of reporters at the forefront.
Clayeh thanked God for the opportunity to lead the Association and commended the Independent Elections Committee and the Inaugural Committee for organizing a peaceful and credible electoral process. He also paid tribute to former RAL leaders and called for a moment of silence in honor of deceased journalists whose dedication helped strengthen press freedom in Liberia.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Clayeh expressed gratitude to his family and colleagues at FrontPage Africa, where he has spent the past 11 years. He credited the institution and its leadership for shaping his professional growth and reaffirmed his commitment to serving all reporters regardless of their media affiliation.
Highlighting the challenges confronting journalists, Clayeh said many reporters continue to work under difficult conditions, facing intimidation, harassment, poor welfare, and legal vulnerabilities despite their critical role in promoting democracy and informing the public.
To address these concerns, he announced plans to establish Liberia’s first comprehensive Digital Reporter Database and a nationwide secretariat network to strengthen communication and institutional coordination among reporters in all fifteen counties.
He also pledged to create a Reporter Welfare and Emergency Support Fund to assist members facing illness, bereavement, and other emergencies, while launching a Legal Protection Initiative to provide support for journalists facing legal challenges arising from responsible and ethical reporting.
Clayeh further disclosed that his administration will strengthen collaboration with the Liberia National Police and other security institutions to improve relations with journalists and reduce incidents of harassment while reporters perform their constitutional duties.
Addressing the public perception of journalists, Clayeh acknowledged that while the vast majority of Liberian reporters are ethical and dedicated professionals, the actions of a few individuals have damaged the image of the profession.
He said his administration will work closely with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), media institutions, and senior journalists to strengthen ethical standards, promote accountability, and restore public confidence in journalism without compromising press freedom.
On the ongoing divisions within the Press Union of Liberia, Clayeh called for reconciliation and constructive dialogue, stressing that a united media is essential to protecting press freedom and advancing Liberia’s democracy.
“The Reporters Association of Liberia will remain a bridge for peace, understanding, and constructive engagement whenever called upon,” he said.
Clayeh also praised international partners, particularly the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, for supporting media development through professional exchanges and training programs that have exposed Liberian journalists to international best practices. He revealed that four members of the new RAL leadership participated in a 2025 journalism exchange program in Hunan Province, China.
He further commended the Embassy of Ireland, Internews Liberia, and the Center for Media Studies and Peacebuilding (CEMESP) for supporting investigative journalism and strengthening media capacity through training and grants.
Regarding concerns over the Association’s previous financial management, Clayeh assured members that his administration will pursue transparency and accountability by engaging the outgoing leadership and the Press Union of Liberia to clarify financial records and outstanding obligations.
He emphasized that the process would be guided by fairness and due process, noting that the objective is to restore confidence in the Association rather than assign blame.
As part of his reform agenda, Clayeh urged members across Liberia to faithfully pay their dues, describing financial independence as essential to sustaining welfare programs, legal assistance, professional development, and institutional reforms.
Concluding his address, the new RAL President called on government institutions, development partners, civil society, the diplomatic community, media organizations, and all journalists to work together in building a stronger, more professional, and united media sector.
He reaffirmed that his administration’s focus will remain on inclusion, welfare, ethical journalism, transparency, and institutional reform to ensure that every Liberian reporter is protected, respected, and empowered to serve the public with integrity.
