Ministry of Local Government, National WASH Commission Deepen Collaboration to Expand County-Level WASH Services

Monrovia, Liberia – The National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Commission has strengthened its partnership with the Ministry of Local Government as part of ongoing efforts to decentralize WASH governance and regulatory services across Liberia.

During a strategic meeting held on Friday, July 10, 2026, the two institutions discussed ways to improve coordination and extend WASH regulatory oversight and services to all 15 counties, ensuring greater access to water, sanitation, and hygiene services at the local level.

Local Government Minister Francis S. Nyumalin Sr. reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting the Commission’s decentralization agenda. He highlighted the government’s plan to establish County Service Centers nationwide, explaining that the facilities will serve as one-stop locations for delivering public services.

According to the Minister, the National WASH Commission will play a vital role in the initiative, with County Coordinators expected to operate from the planned service centers to strengthen regulation, coordination, and service delivery. As an immediate measure, he also pledged to work with county superintendents to secure office space for the Commission in selected priority counties.

National WASH Commission Executive Director Morris G. Gono welcomed the Ministry’s support, describing the meeting as a significant step toward achieving the Commission’s decentralization goals.
Gono noted that the Commission currently maintains a physical presence only in Grand Bassa County, making expansion into the remaining counties a pressing priority.

He expressed confidence that the partnership with the Ministry of Local Government will improve local coordination, bring regulatory services closer to citizens, and enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene governance throughout Liberia.
