MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Liberia is expected to host more than 20 Speakers of African Parliaments for a three-day high-level conference scheduled for December 9–11, 2026, in Monrovia.
Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, Richard Nagbe Koon, announced the planned gathering, which is expected to bring legislative leaders from across the continent to the Liberian capital for discussions on peace, unity, parliamentary cooperation and Africa’s future.
Speaker Koon said the conference will provide a platform for African legislative leaders to exchange experiences and explore practical ways of strengthening cooperation among the continent’s parliaments.
“We are one of the oldest continents in the world, but we are not united. There are some things that we think are the cause of why we are not moving forward compared to others in the world,” Koon said.
He said the conference is intended to encourage participants to learn from one another and develop frameworks that could support stronger cooperation among African countries and legislative institutions.
“This program is going to help us improve, learn from each other, and create frameworks for the future because that is the only way forward,” he stated.
According to Koon, the outcome of the discussions could also influence subsequent initiatives by participating legislatures.
“What is going to be discussed in those rooms will inform our next plan of action,” he added.
Liberia’s Role as Host
Speaker Koon also highlighted the significance of bringing the gathering to Liberia, noting the country’s historical position as Africa’s oldest independent republic.
He said he advocated for Liberia to host the conference during the previous gathering, arguing that the country could provide an appropriate setting for African parliamentary leaders to examine shared challenges and opportunities.
The December conference is expected to focus on parliamentary cooperation, peace and unity, legislative experience-sharing, and identifying practical areas for greater collaboration among African countries.
If held as announced, the gathering would bring a significant number of African legislative leaders to Monrovia and place Liberia at the center of continental parliamentary discussions in December.
