Monrovia, Liberia – Gus Harris, CEO of the Gbokpayou (Helping Child) Foundation and Margibi County District #1 Representative Aspirant, has called on the Government of Liberia to urgently engage the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to consider the temporary deployment of peacekeeping forces along the Liberia–Guinea border.
Speaking on the recent tensions affecting communities near the border, Harris said the protection of innocent civilians must be the government’s highest priority. He stressed that a neutral ECOWAS peacekeeping presence could help prevent further escalation, restore confidence among residents, and create a peaceful environment for diplomatic negotiations between Liberia and Guinea.
“I respectfully urge the Government of Liberia to formally request ECOWAS to consider deploying peacekeeping forces to our shared border with Guinea until both countries reach a peaceful and lasting resolution. Preventing conflict and protecting lives must always come first,” Harris stated.
He further noted that Liberia and Guinea have maintained decades of friendship and cooperation, emphasizing that dialogue—not confrontation—is the only path to resolving border disputes. According to Harris, regional cooperation through ECOWAS would demonstrate West Africa’s commitment to peace, security, and stability.
Harris also called on citizens of both nations to remain calm, avoid violence or misinformation, and support all peaceful efforts aimed at resolving the situation.
“As leaders, we must act before tensions escalate. Peace, diplomacy, and regional unity are the strongest tools we have to safeguard our people and preserve the long-standing relationship between Liberia and Guinea,” he concluded.
