MONROVIA, Liberia — Preparations for a major road construction project linking River Gee and Grand Gedeh counties have advanced following a high-level coordination meeting between River Gee County authorities, a national lawmaker and representatives of China Railway Seventh Group Co. Ltd. in Monrovia.
River Gee County Superintendent Mike T. Swengbe, accompanied by Representative IB Wuo, met with officials of the Chinese construction company to reaffirm local support and discuss coordination ahead of the project’s implementation.
The Ministry of Public Works has approved China Railway Seventh Group Co. Ltd. to construct and pave the road from Gbeapo Flaroken in River Gee County to John Davis Town in Grand Gedeh County, with construction expected to commence in November 2026.
The project is being viewed as a significant infrastructure intervention for southeastern Liberia, where poor road conditions have historically affected transportation, commerce and access to essential public services.
Speaking during the meeting, Superintendent Swengbe welcomed the contractor’s involvement and stressed the importance of delivering the project to communities that have endured difficult road conditions for years.
“We thank the contractors for being part of the process of relieving the southeastern region from such a deplorable road condition,” Swengbe said. “This road has held our people back for too long, and this project represents real progress for River Gee and our neighboring counties.”
Superintendent Swengbe also acknowledged the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for prioritizing road infrastructure in the southeastern region.
“We thank the President for making sure the region is released from bad road,” he said. “His commitment is giving hope to our people that development is coming.”
Representative IB Wuo joined the county leadership in welcoming China Railway Seventh Group and pledged legislative support toward the successful implementation of the project.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for county officials and the contractor to consider community engagement and coordination as preparations intensify ahead of the November start date.
Upon completion, the Gbeapo Flaroken–John Davis Town corridor is expected to improve transportation and connectivity between River Gee and Grand Gedeh, while facilitating access to markets, healthcare facilities, schools and other essential services for residents along the road corridor.
For communities that have long faced transportation challenges, the planned road represents a major infrastructure development with potential implications for regional commerce, mobility and social services across southeastern Liberia.
