EDITORIAL: District #14 Politics Ahead of 2029 — The People Must Come First

MONROVIA, Liberia — As Liberia gradually looks toward the 2029 general elections, political conversations in Montserrado County’s District #14 are beginning to attract attention. Recent public engagements by James Lawrence Hinneh, President of the National Customs Brokers Association of Liberia, have added a new dimension to discussions about the district’s political future.

Hinneh’s growing public visibility and longstanding association with disadvantaged communities have placed him among the figures attracting attention in the district. His recent interactions with residents raise important questions about political representation, community engagement, and what constituents expect from those seeking public office.

However, political visibility should not be confused with proven electoral support, just as holding public office should not automatically be taken as evidence of public satisfaction. Both claims require careful examination of the facts, the candidates’ records, and the concerns of the people.

Incumbent Representative Kerkula Muka Kamara has an opportunity to present a clear account of his legislative performance, development initiatives, and efforts to address the needs of his constituents. His political team should prioritize transparent communication and meaningful engagement, ensuring that residents understand what has been accomplished, what remains unfinished, and what can realistically be expected in the years ahead.

At the same time, Hinneh must demonstrate that his community engagement can translate into a credible public-service agenda. Residents deserve more than visits and political conversations; they deserve clear proposals addressing unemployment, sanitation, education, healthcare, roads, security, and economic opportunities for young people.

Assistant Minister Emmanuel K. Barnes-I is also part of the emerging political discussion. If he intends to pursue a political future in the district, his public-service record, policy priorities, and vision for addressing community challenges should receive the same level of scrutiny.

The central issue is not who can generate the most political excitement, but who can present the most credible response to the needs of District #14.

Political competition can be beneficial when it encourages public officials to become more accountable and prospective candidates to develop practical solutions. It becomes less constructive when it is reduced to personal attacks, exaggerated claims, political intimidation, or arguments over personalities rather than public policy.

Representative Kamara and his team should therefore view the growing political conversation as an opportunity to engage residents, explain their record, and address legitimate concerns. Potential challengers, in turn, should be prepared to explain their qualifications, priorities, and proposed solutions rather than relying solely on criticism of the incumbent.

Equally important, residents must not be treated merely as instruments for securing political power. Their concerns should shape the debate, and their ability to assess candidates should be respected. Ultimately, the electorate—not political commentators, campaign teams, or public appearances—will determine whom it chooses to represent the district.

Although the 2029 elections remain ahead, the emerging political conversation provides an opportunity to encourage greater accountability and more substantive debate. It is too early to declare a winner or assume that any contender has an insurmountable advantage.

Our view is that District #14 deserves a contest defined by ideas, measurable commitments, integrity, and service to the people. The incumbent should be judged by his record, while potential challengers should be judged by their experience, proposals, and demonstrated commitment to the community.

The people of District #14 must remain at the center of the political debate. Their daily struggles, development priorities, and expectations for responsible representation should matter far more than the ambitions of any individual or political camp.

As 2029 approaches, the real test for every contender will be the ability to demonstrate, through credible actions and practical proposals, how their leadership could contribute to a better future for District #14.
