‎Bukonjadeh CEO Calls for Urgent Action on Poverty and Infrastructure in Bong County

‎
‎BONG COUNTY, LIBERIA — Elton Johns, Chief Executive Officer of the Bukonjadeh Group of Companies, has urged the Liberian government to take concrete steps to address poverty, poor road conditions, and limited access to essential services in Bong County and other parts of central Liberia.
‎
‎Johns said persistent economic hardship and inadequate public infrastructure continue to undermine livelihoods, constrain local businesses, and limit opportunities for rural communities.
‎
‎“Our people in Bong County and central Liberia cannot survive on political rhetoric alone,” Johns said, calling for practical measures to improve living conditions and expand economic opportunities.
‎
‎Economic Hardship and Infrastructure Challenges
‎
‎Johns identified rising commodity prices, limited employment opportunities, and poor transportation networks as major challenges facing rural households. He noted that deteriorating roads often make it difficult for farmers to transport produce to markets, reducing their earnings and increasing the cost of doing business.
‎
‎He also expressed concern about limited access to safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, functional healthcare facilities, and quality education. Meanwhile, women traders and small-business owners face financial constraints that restrict their ability to sustain and expand their enterprises.
‎
‎Private Sector Investment and Government Responsibility
‎
‎While acknowledging the role of private businesses in creating jobs, providing financing, and supporting local enterprises, Johns stressed that private-sector initiatives cannot substitute for the government’s responsibility to provide essential public services and infrastructure.
‎
‎“Businesses can create jobs, extend micro-credit, and spur investment, but we cannot replace the state’s responsibility to build roads, equip clinics, and provide basic public safety and social security,” he said.
‎
‎He added that reliable infrastructure and improved public services are essential to creating an environment in which farmers, entrepreneurs, and local businesses can thrive.
‎
‎Call for Targeted Government Action
‎
‎Johns called on national authorities to prioritize agricultural assistance for vulnerable households, rehabilitate farm-to-market roads, and ensure that public resources reach rural schools, health facilities, and water systems.
‎
‎He also advocated stronger partnerships between government and indigenous businesses to expand access to microfinance and support small enterprises, particularly those owned by women and young people.
‎
‎A Call for Inclusive Development
‎
‎Johns said addressing the challenges facing Bong County and surrounding communities should form part of a broader national commitment to equitable development.
‎
‎He reaffirmed the Bukonjadeh Group of Companies’ commitment to supporting community development while urging the government to ensure that public investment and essential services reach Liberians regardless of where they live.
