MONROVIA, Liberia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has launched the Presidential Cleaning-Up Campaign, a nationwide sanitation initiative aimed at addressing Liberia’s persistent waste-management challenges while creating income-generating opportunities for young people and other citizens.
The initiative, being implemented in partnership with the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) under the banner “Clean City Initiative,” seeks to promote cleaner communities through sustained cleaning, waste collection and improved environmental management.
The campaign links environmental sanitation with employment, particularly for young Liberians facing limited job opportunities. Participants in the program are expected to engage in community cleaning activities while receiving financial compensation for their services.
The initiative is therefore designed to address two pressing concerns simultaneously: Liberia’s sanitation challenges and unemployment, particularly among young people.
Under the program, community members will take part in cleaning streets, public spaces and other areas affected by poor waste disposal and accumulated garbage. The government is also encouraging citizens to properly dispose of waste and support efforts to keep their communities clean.
The partnership with the Monrovia City Corporation is expected to enhance sanitation operations in the capital, where several communities continue to experience challenges related to waste disposal and environmental cleanliness.
The administration says the campaign is intended not only to improve the appearance and health of Liberian communities but also to provide citizens with opportunities to earn income through meaningful community service.
The launch of the Clean City Initiative comes as the government seeks to make environmental cleanliness a shared responsibility while using sanitation activities as a means of supporting livelihoods.
If effectively sustained, the initiative could contribute to cleaner public spaces, healthier communities and additional short-term employment opportunities for Liberians, particularly young people.
