PLEEBO, Maryland County – Maryland County senatorial aspirant Eric Giko has fulfilled his commitment to grassroots sports by completing a L$120,000 donation to support the registration of teams competing in the 2026 Pleebo Zonal League. The final installment of L$75,000 was presented over the weekend during a brief ceremony at Giko’s home office, completing an earlier contribution of L$45,000 and honoring his full pledge to the competition.
Presenting the donation on Giko’s behalf, Pleebo District Chairman William Papie Torbort said the contribution underscores Giko’s unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and community development through sports. According to Torbort, Giko believes that every participating zone should have an equal opportunity to compete, regardless of financial challenges.
He noted that the donation is intended to reduce the registration burden on teams while encouraging greater participation and strengthening grassroots football in the district. Receiving the contribution on behalf of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) Pleebo Sub-Branch was the Acting Chairman for Pleebo District, Emmanuel Wah Roberts, who praised Giko for honoring his promise.
Roberts described the donation as a timely and meaningful intervention that will enable participating zones to meet their registration requirements and ensure the successful staging of the tournament. He assured the public that the funds would be used strictly for their intended purpose and called on other citizens, community leaders, and stakeholders to emulate Giko’s support for youth and sports development.
«”Hon. Giko always does this every year, so we are not surprised. His continued support for football and young people speaks for itself,” Roberts said.» Under the arrangement, the L$120,000 will subsidize registration fees for all participating zones, with each team receiving L$7,500 toward the required L$15,000 registration fee, while the respective zones will cover the remaining balance.
The Pleebo Zonal League remains one of Maryland County’s premier grassroots football competitions, providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents, foster community unity, and advance the development of football across Pleebo District.
