President Boakai Signs Landmark National Sports Fund Act Into Law, Unlocking New Hope for Liberian Sports

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has signed into law the National Sports Fund Act, landmark legislation that establishes the Liberia National Sports Fund Authority, creating a dedicated and sustainable financing mechanism aimed at transforming sports development across the country.

The bill, sponsored by River Gee County Senator Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie, was overwhelmingly passed by the Liberian Senate on July 23, 2025, before receiving concurrence from the House of Representatives. With President Boakai’s signature, the legislation has now officially become law, marking a significant milestone for Liberia’s sports sector.

The newly created Authority will be responsible for mobilizing, managing, and disbursing funds to support sports development nationwide, ending decades of uncertainty over financing for athletes, sporting federations, and infrastructure.

Speaking following the signing of the Act on Monday, August 17, 2026, Senator Sogbie, a former Lone Star national team striker, described the legislation as a historic achievement that will reshape the future of sports in Liberia.

“This is more than just a law—it is a game changer for Liberian sports,” Senator Sogbie said. “For decades, our athletes have struggled because of inadequate funding and poor facilities. Today, we have laid the foundation for a sustainable system that will nurture talent, strengthen our national teams, and restore pride in Liberian sports.”

Under the new law, the National Sports Fund will receive revenue from levies on selected luxury and non-sport-related goods, along with annual government budgetary allocations, grants, and donations from development partners and private institutions.

Resources from the Fund will be dedicated to:
Constructing and rehabilitating stadiums and other sporting facilities across Liberia.

Supporting national teams participating in regional and international competitions.
Promoting grassroots sports, youth development, and talent identification programs.
Training and certifying coaches, referees, and other technical personnel.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the Authority will be governed by a Board of Directors and subjected to legislative oversight. All funds, including government subsidies, grants, and donations, will undergo annual independent audits, with reports made available to the public.

President Boakai’s approval of the legislation reinforces his administration’s commitment to revitalizing sports by investing in grassroots programs and expanding sports infrastructure throughout Liberia’s 15 counties.

Widely regarded as one of the most consequential pieces of sports legislation in Liberia’s history, the National Sports Fund Act is expected to provide the long-term financial stability needed to develop athletes, improve facilities, and position Liberia to compete more effectively on the continental and global stage.
