MONROVIA, Liberia – The President of the National Customs Brokers Association of Liberia (NCBAL), James L. Hinneh, has called on Liberians to use this year’s Flag Day celebration as a moment to renew their commitment to nation-building, institutional reform, and economic growth.
In a Flag Day message, Hinneh said Liberia’s national flag represents far more than the country’s history and independence, stressing that its true meaning should be reflected in good governance, strong institutions, and expanded opportunities for all citizens.
“Our flag reminds us of where we came from. Our decisions today will determine where Liberia goes tomorrow. Therefore, let us raise our flag with pride, but let us also raise our standards,” Hinneh stated.
He noted that while Liberia has demonstrated resilience throughout its history—from independence to post-war recovery and democratic progress—the country’s future depends on the collective actions of its people today.
The NCBAL President emphasized that sustainable national development requires strong collaboration among government, the private sector, civil society, and professional institutions. He urged the creation of an enabling environment where businesses can grow, trade can flourish, and young people can acquire the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to the national economy.
Hinneh further highlighted the strategic importance of Liberia’s ports, borders, customs systems, and public institutions, describing them as vital engines of economic development. According to him, improving efficiency, transparency, accountability, and professionalism within these institutions will strengthen investor confidence, facilitate trade, create jobs, and expand economic opportunities.
He also called on Liberians to prioritize education, invest in skills and innovation, promote responsible entrepreneurship, modernize public institutions, and improve trade competitiveness.
Additionally, Hinneh urged policymakers and citizens alike to foster an environment that attracts investment, supports local businesses, empowers young people, and promotes a culture of integrity, accountability, patriotism, and national service.
“As we celebrate Flag Day, let us build a Liberia that does not merely celebrate its history, but actively creates a better future for generations to come,” he concluded.
