House of Representatives Ratifies Salayea–Konia Road Loan Agreement

Capitol Hill, Liberia The Liberia – House of Representatives has officially ratified a loan agreement to finance the construction of the Salayea–Konia Road Project in Lofa County. The decision, taken on Thursday, July 16, 2026, followed a detailed report from the Joint Committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Judiciary, which underscored the project’s financial feasibility, legal compliance, and broad socio-economic benefits.

The Committee explained that the loan is highly concessional, carrying only a 1% annual interest rate and a 0.5% service charge, terms considered extremely favorable for Liberia’s economic outlook. Lawmakers emphasized that such financing arrangements are rare and represent a strategic opportunity to advance national infrastructure development without imposing heavy debt burdens.

Beyond the financial advantages, the Salayea–Konia Road Project is expected to transform Lofa County’s economic landscape. Improved road connectivity will facilitate easier movement of goods and people, strengthen cross-border trade with neighboring countries, and open up new markets for local farmers. By reducing transportation costs and travel time, the project is projected to significantly boost agricultural productivity and stimulate broader economic growth.

The Committee also highlighted critical safeguards that must accompany the project’s implementation. These include strict adherence to environmental protection standards, fair and timely compensation for communities affected by construction, and guaranteed maintenance funding through the National Road Fund to ensure the road’s sustainability.

With the House’s ratification complete, the loan agreement will now be forwarded to the Liberian Senate for concurrence. If approved, the project will mark a major milestone in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its road network and promote inclusive development across rural counties.
