Liberia, China Strengthen Agricultural Cooperation as Boakai Receives Modern Farm Machinery

MONROVIA, Liberia — Liberia and China have taken another step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation in agriculture following the official handover of the China-Aid Agricultural Machinery Modernization Project to the Liberian government.

The handover ceremony, held on October 30, 2026, was attended by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu, Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah, and other government officials and stakeholders.

The project forms part of China’s support for Liberia’s efforts to modernize its agricultural sector, improve production capacity, and strengthen national food security.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Yin Chengwu described the initiative as a practical demonstration of the commitments reached by the leaders of both countries and the outcomes of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

He said the project also reflects the growing strategic partnership between Liberia and China, reaffirming Beijing’s readiness to deepen cooperation with Monrovia in agriculture and other development priorities.

According to the ambassador, China’s continued engagement in Liberia’s agricultural sector is intended to support efforts to improve food production and strengthen the country’s capacity to achieve greater food security.

President Boakai and Agriculture Minister Nuetah expressed appreciation to the Chinese government for its continued assistance, describing China as a reliable development partner that has supported Liberia across several sectors.

Both officials reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to maintaining and strengthening its medium- and long-term partnership with China, while emphasizing the importance of properly maintaining and utilizing the donated agricultural machinery.

They said the equipment would be used to support agricultural production and advance the government’s efforts to expand domestic food production.

A major highlight of the ceremony was the formal signing of the project handover certificate by Minister Nuetah and Ambassador Yin, officially completing the transfer of the agricultural machinery project to the Liberian side.

The handover comes amid Liberia’s broader efforts to reduce dependence on imported food, improve agricultural productivity, and strengthen the capacity of local farmers through mechanization and technical support.

The effective deployment and maintenance of the equipment will be important in determining how much the project contributes to agricultural production and the country’s long-term food security objectives.

The initiative further underscores the role of international partnerships in supporting Liberia’s agricultural development agenda.
