LAC Expands Access to Safe Drinking Water in Grand Bassa, Completing 38 of 46 Planned Handpumps

GRAND BASSA COUNTY, Liberia — For communities that have long depended on creeks and other running water sources, access to safe drinking water represents more than a basic necessity; it offers renewed hope for healthier families, improved living conditions and a stronger future. Through its ongoing handpump project, the Liberian Agricultural Company (LAC) is helping make that future possible, having completed and dedicated 38 of 46 planned handpumps in communities across Grand Bassa County.

Sponsored by LAC as part of its sustainability commitment, the initiative seeks to improve access to safer drinking water, reduce communities’ dependence on potentially unsafe water sources and support better health and well-being. By investing in this essential resource, the company is helping address a fundamental community need while contributing to more resilient and sustainable livelihoods.

The latest handover included five handpumps serving communities in Electoral Districts 3 and 4. Beneficiary communities include Gbenee Town, Joe Crossing Town, Nana Glaydor and Gbah Town.

For residents, the intervention represents a meaningful improvement in daily life, bringing safe drinking water closer to home and reinforcing the importance of partnerships that respond directly to community needs.

“Water is life. By providing us with safe drinking water, you are making a real difference in our lives,” a community representative said, expressing appreciation for the initiative.

LAC Sustainability Coordinator Harriett Attoh confirmed that the remaining eight handpumps will be constructed in surrounding communities during the upcoming dry season, completing the planned installation of 46 handpumps.

Attoh also urged residents to take ownership of the facilities by protecting them and ensuring their proper use. She emphasized that community care would be essential to keeping the pumps operational over time and reaffirmed LAC’s support for maintenance when needed.

Beyond the construction of water facilities, the project reflects LAC’s broader commitment to creating lasting, positive change in the communities surrounding its operations. Access to safe drinking water can help strengthen household well-being, support healthier communities and create better conditions for families to thrive.

Through targeted investments in essential services and community development, LAC continues to demonstrate the importance of sustainability initiatives that deliver practical benefits, strengthen community relationships and contribute to a healthier, more inclusive and resilient future for Grand Bassa County.
