NANA KRU, Sinoe County — Students of Nana Kru Public School in Dugbe District, Sinoe County, are attending classes in a deteriorating town hall after years without a permanent school building, prompting community members to appeal for urgent government intervention.
The facility currently serving as the school is reportedly a temporary structure built for community meetings. It is constructed largely from mud, wooden poles and other locally available materials, with sections of the walls and framework showing visible signs of deterioration.
A recent visit to the community showed students using the aging structure for classes, highlighting the difficult conditions under which children in Nana Kru are pursuing their education.
Residents said the community has struggled with inadequate school infrastructure for about eight years. They explained that the town hall was made available to the school after the community lacked a suitable facility for students.
What was initially intended as a temporary arrangement has continued for years, according to community members.
Residents Seek Greater Government Attention
Community leaders expressed concern over what they described as insufficient government support for the school, particularly in providing a safe and permanent learning facility.
Residents also claimed that they have not seen recent visits from the current county education leadership or the District Education Officer assigned to Dugbe District.
Those claims could not be independently verified during the visit and would require clarification from the relevant education authorities.
The community is now calling on the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education, the Sinoe County Administration, lawmakers, development partners and citizens of the county to help address the school’s infrastructure needs.
Former County Leaders Also Mentioned
Some residents also expressed disappointment over what they described as limited engagement by former Sinoe County superintendents Lee Nagbe Chea and Peter Wleh Nyensweh Sr., claiming that neither visited Nana Kru during their respective tenures.
Public records identify both men as former superintendents of Sinoe County. The current county superintendent is Hon. Alexander Nah Sleweon Sr.
Residents are appealing to Superintendent Sleweon to visit Nana Kru, assess the situation firsthand and engage the Ministry of Education and potential development partners on possible solutions.
Education Infrastructure Remains a Concern
The situation comes as the Sinoe County Administration has identified improving and expanding access to quality education as one of its development priorities for the 2025–2029 period.
For residents of Nana Kru, however, the need is immediate.
They say students should not have to pursue their education in a deteriorating community structure simply because their community lacks a permanent school building.
The residents are therefore urging the county administration, central government, local lawmakers, development partners and other stakeholders to work together to construct a suitable facility for Nana Kru Public School.
For a community that says it has endured inadequate learning conditions for nearly eight years, residents believe government attention and concrete intervention could provide students with a safer and more suitable environment in which to learn.
