Monrovia, Liberia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has praised the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) for helping the country reach a major fiscal milestone, with domestic revenue collections exceeding US$1 billion for the first time in Liberia’s 179-year history.
President Boakai, in remarks delivered to mark the achievement, singled out LRA Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah and his team for their role in strengthening the country’s revenue collection system.
The President said the record performance is the result of sustained efforts by the revenue authority, cooperation among government institutions and increased participation by taxpayers across the country.
He also attributed the progress to what he described as a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to improving domestic resource mobilization.
Government figures cited in the President’s address show that domestic revenue collections have risen steadily in recent years. Revenue increased from about US$612 million in 2023 to US$699 million in 2024, before reaching approximately US$848 million in 2025.
With collections now exceeding the US$1 billion mark in 2026, the current figure represents an increase of more than US$388 million, or roughly 63 percent, compared with the 2023 level.
The government has set a further target of generating US$1.3 billion in domestic revenue by the end of 2026.
President Boakai emphasized that the milestone was achieved through revenue generated within Liberia, including taxes, customs duties, fees and other statutory payments, rather than through external borrowing or foreign assistance.
The administration has linked the improved revenue performance to reforms being implemented at the LRA, including stronger compliance measures, enhanced enforcement, expanded digital services, improved taxpayer engagement, revenue assurance initiatives and modernization of tax and Customs operations.
The President also acknowledged the role of taxpayers in reaching the milestone, noting that the contribution extends across various sectors of the economy, including market women, traders, employees, professionals and businesses.
Despite celebrating the achievement, President Boakai cautioned that increased revenue collection must ultimately produce measurable benefits for citizens. He called for continued efforts to expand the domestic revenue base while maintaining accountability in the management and use of public resources.
The US$1 billion threshold marks a significant point in Liberia’s efforts to increase its reliance on domestically generated resources and strengthen the government’s ability to finance national priorities and development programs from revenue collected within the country.
