VOINJAMA, LOFA COUNTY — Preparations for the 2026 Lofa County District League have received a significant boost following a donation of L$2 million and sporting materials from Lofa County Senator Momo Tarnuekollie Cyrus.
The contribution, officially handed over in Voinjama on September 7, 2026, is intended to support the organization of the annual tournament, which will bring together football teams representing all 11 administrative districts of the county.
Senator Cyrus, who was represented by his Chief of Office Staff, Arthur Kowah, also provided 11 sets of football jerseys, 22 footballs, and a championship trophy to assist participating teams and tournament organizers.
Speaking during the presentation, Kowah said the Senator considers sports an important avenue for nurturing young talent, promoting peaceful coexistence, and encouraging discipline among Liberia’s youth. He noted that the assistance reflects Senator Cyrus’ continued commitment to empowering young people and strengthening grassroots sporting activities in Lofa County.
The support arrives as districts intensify preparations for the countywide competition, which is expected to attract athletes and spectators from across the region.
Accepting the donation, Lofa County Superintendent J. Lavelah Massaquoi expressed appreciation for what he described as a meaningful contribution toward the successful hosting of the tournament. He confirmed that each of the county’s 11 districts will field its own team, setting the stage for a highly competitive championship.
Massaquoi urged local leaders, sports administrators, and development partners to continue investing in youth-centered initiatives, emphasizing that sports remain an effective tool for community development and social cohesion.
He also announced that this year’s District League will feature kickball alongside football, marking the first time the sport will be included in the county competition. According to the Superintendent, the addition is designed to expand participation and create opportunities for more young people to showcase their abilities.
To coordinate preparations, the Superintendent named Jusu Fambulleh as Chairman of the District League Organizing Committee. The committee will oversee logistical arrangements and ensure the smooth execution of the tournament, which is scheduled to begin next week.
Beyond determining county champions, the District League is expected to promote friendship among communities, encourage healthy competition, and expose talented athletes to opportunities that could advance their sporting careers.
Sports officials and community leaders have welcomed Senator Cyrus’ intervention, describing it as a timely investment that will ease organizational challenges and improve the quality of the tournament.
