MONROVIA, Liberia – The Government of Liberia has imported 200 live Muturu cattle from Guinea and Mali in a significant move to revitalize the country’s livestock sector and advance national food security under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s Liberians Feed Yourselves Agenda.
Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah announced that the cattle will be distributed to farmers in Grand Kru County, where the government plans to rehabilitate the county ranch through the Public Sector Investment Program (PSIP) to support sustainable livestock production.
As part of the initiative, some of the cattle will also be transferred to the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) to strengthen Liberia’s livestock breeding program.
Through a partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), CARI will utilize artificial insemination technology to improve breeding, expand the national herd, and enhance livestock productivity.
The Muturu breed is known for its resilience, natural disease resistance, adaptability to West African conditions, and strong reproductive capacity, making it well suited for Liberia’s livestock development efforts.
The Ministry of Agriculture said the initiative is expected to increase local beef production, improve breeding programs, create economic opportunities for livestock farmers, and contribute to the country’s food security objectives.
Providing an update on broader agricultural reforms, Minister Nuetah disclosed that the government has developed more than 16,000 hectares of lowland for rice cultivation and over 1,200 hectares for cassava production.
He added that 22 agricultural producers have also received government support to expand production and strengthen agricultural value chains. The minister emphasized that the investments are aimed at boosting domestic food production and ensuring Liberians produce more of the food they consume.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to investing in agriculture, promoting research and innovation, empowering farmers, and building a more food-secure and self-sufficient Liberia.
