Liberia Woos U.S. Investors to Boost Agricultural Development and Job Creation

MONROVIA, Liberia – The Liberian government is seeking to attract additional foreign investment into the agriculture sector as part of efforts to expand food production, create employment and strengthen the country’s economic base.

Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah emphasized the need for increased private-sector participation during a meeting with a visiting delegation from Maryland, United States, which is exploring potential investment opportunities in Liberia.

During the engagement, the delegation disclosed its interest in developing commercial pineapple plantations supported by modern processing facilities. The proposed project is expected to transform locally cultivated pineapples into finished products for the American market.

The investment proposal also includes plans by Clyopatra Winery to establish a wine production facility in Liberia. Together, the proposed ventures are projected to create over 350 jobs.

Minister Nuetah encouraged the delegation to consider other agricultural opportunities, particularly in rice, cassava, maize and vegetable production, which he described as important areas for investment.

He stressed that agricultural investments should incorporate local farmers through structured partnerships that provide dependable markets for their harvests, improve farming skills and increase production capacity.

The Minister further highlighted the government’s willingness to support investors through an improved business environment and the development of stronger systems connecting agricultural production, processing and marketing.

For her part, Prince George’s County Council Member At-Large Wala Blegay praised the Ministry’s efforts to advance agricultural development and reaffirmed the delegation’s interest in contributing to Liberia’s growing agribusiness industry.

The discussions come amid renewed government efforts to reduce the country’s reliance on imported food by expanding domestic agricultural production and encouraging private investment.

Under the National Agriculture Development Plan, Liberia aims to improve food availability, strengthen the agricultural value chain and achieve greater food self-sufficiency by 2030.
