BUTAW, SINOE COUNTY — Atty. Teklo Maxwell Grigsby II has announced a package of educational and infrastructural support for Butaw High School, including 18 university scholarships, payment of graduation fees for all current 12th-grade students, a US$1,000 cash contribution, and a pledge to provide the school with a modern auditorium.
The commitments, announced during the school’s graduation and closing ceremony, are intended to expand access to higher education, ease financial challenges facing graduating students, support teachers, and improve the institution’s facilities.
18 Scholarships for University Education
Under the scholarship package, Grigsby pledged to sponsor the second- and third-ranked Dux graduating students to attend any university in Liberia.
An additional 16 students will receive scholarships to pursue higher education at either Sinoe Community College or Tubman University, bringing the total number of promised university scholarships to 18.
The initiative is expected to provide selected students with opportunities to continue their education beyond high school and reduce some of the financial barriers associated with tertiary education.
Grigsby also committed to paying the graduation fees of all current 12th-grade students at Butaw High School, a measure aimed at helping students complete their secondary education without the additional burden of graduation-related expenses.
US$1,000 Allocated for Teachers and Graduating Students

As part of his latest intervention, Grigsby contributed US$1,000 in cash, divided between teacher compensation and support for the school’s graduating class.
Of the amount, US$600 was allocated as compensation for two teachers recruited from Maryland County, while US$400 was designated for refreshments for graduating students and teachers.
The contribution follows an earlier effort to address shortages in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry instruction at the school.
Continued Support for Science Education
In February 2026, students at Butaw High School reportedly staged a protest over the absence of teachers for Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
Following the protest, Grigsby worked with the school administration to recruit two teachers from Maryland County to help address the shortage.
He has continued providing financial support for the teachers’ compensation, according to information provided about the intervention. The latest US$600 allocation is intended to provide additional support for their services.
The recruitment of the two educators was aimed at helping students receive instruction in the three subjects, which are important to students pursuing science-related courses and other academic disciplines.
Modern Auditorium Planned for Butaw High School
Beyond scholarships and teacher support, Grigsby pledged to provide Butaw High School with a modern auditorium to accommodate academic and institutional activities.
The proposed facility is expected to serve as a venue for school assemblies, educational programs, graduation ceremonies, and other official events.
If implemented, the project would add to the school’s infrastructure and provide a dedicated space for activities involving students, teachers, administrators, and the wider school community.
Focus on Educational Access and Institutional Development
Grigsby’s latest commitments span several areas of education, including university access, completion of secondary education, teacher support, and school infrastructure.
The scholarship package is intended to assist 18 students in pursuing tertiary education, while the graduation-fee pledge seeks to reduce costs for students completing their final year of high school.
Meanwhile, continued compensation for the two science teachers addresses a staffing challenge that previously prompted student protests, and the proposed auditorium represents a longer-term infrastructure commitment.
The extent of the initiative’s impact will depend on the implementation of the scholarship arrangements and the fulfillment of the promised infrastructure project.
For Butaw High School, the commitments present an opportunity to strengthen academic support, improve access to higher education, and address some of the institution’s educational and infrastructural needs.
