MONROVIA, Liberia — The legal proceedings involving former Vice President Jewel Howard Taylor have advanced following the withdrawal of a defense request for a preliminary examination before the Monrovia City Court.
The defense team formally withdrew the request during Monday’s proceedings, after the court had already commenced the hearing and prosecutors had begun presenting evidence in the matter.
The prosecution raised no objection to the defense’s decision, maintaining that the evidence presented was sufficient to establish probable cause and warrant the continuation of the case.
In addressing the matter, the presiding judge cited Section 12 of Liberia’s Criminal Procedure Law, which provides the defense with the right to withdraw a request for a preliminary examination.
Following the withdrawal, the court ordered that the case be forwarded to the appropriate court for further proceedings.
Prosecutors are expected to pursue the matter through the filing of a formal indictment, which would move the case into the next phase of the judicial process.
The development marks a significant procedural turn in the case, as attention now shifts to the appropriate court for subsequent legal proceedings involving the former vice president.
