MONROVIA — District #17 resident and community advocate Hon. Morris Sheriff has condemned the reported mistreatment of students during a District Sitting held on May 23, 2026, at the Unity Conference Center, calling for greater respect for students’ rights and renewed attention to education.
In a statement issued following the incident, Sheriff expressed concern over reports that students who peacefully gathered to raise concerns about what they described as the “neglect of education and prioritizing pageantry” were allegedly met with force instead of dialogue.
He said the incident should concern every well-meaning citizen, stressing that education remains the foundation of national development and should be treated as a priority by those in positions of leadership.
“When students begin speaking publicly about educational challenges, it should concern every well-meaning citizen because education remains the foundation of any progressive society,” Sheriff said.
According to him, the issues raised by the students were both legitimate and deserving of serious attention, particularly from the leaders to whom their concerns were directed.
Sheriff argued that District #17 cannot claim meaningful progress while academic excellence and educational development continue to receive insufficient attention.
He further maintained that young people deserve leaders who are willing to listen to their concerns and engage them constructively rather than silence their voices.
The community advocate called on stakeholders to embrace dialogue, accountability, and mutual respect when addressing issues affecting students, emphasizing that responsible leadership requires meaningful engagement, especially on matters concerning education and the future of young people.
