WEAH VILLAGE, Maryland County – More than 400 residents of Weah Village in Maryland County’s Electoral District #1 are making an urgent appeal for access to safe drinking water, warning that their community’s only water source is putting lives at risk.
With no hand pump or protected well, residents say they depend entirely on a nearby creek for drinking, cooking, washing, and other daily activities. They fear the water has become unsafe due to contamination from runoff, including waste and debris from nearby road accident scenes.
Community members say the lack of clean water has left families vulnerable to waterborne diseases and other health complications, particularly among children and the elderly.
Describing the situation as desperate, the residents are appealing to the Government of Liberia, District #1 Representative P. Mike Jurry, and humanitarian organizations to urgently provide a hand pump or another dependable source of safe drinking water.
Responding to the appeal, Representative Jurry said he had not previously been informed about the community’s water crisis. He announced that engineers from his office will visit Weah Village next week to assess the situation and determine the most appropriate intervention.
Residents remain hopeful that the planned assessment will lead to immediate action and finally bring safe, clean drinking water to the community after years of hardship.
