Kanweaken Nears Historic Milestone as Modern City Hall Project Reaches Final Stage in River Gee

River Gee County — The City of Kanweaken, widely regarded as the commercial center of River Gee County, is approaching a major developmental milestone as construction of its first modern City Hall advances toward completion.

The landmark facility, located within the Gbeapo Kanweaken Civil Compound, is expected to be dedicated and officially opened for public use in the coming months, marking a significant step in strengthening municipal governance and public service delivery in the city.

Upon completion, the new City Hall will become the largest and most modern public facility of its kind in River Gee County, providing Kanweaken with a permanent administrative headquarters decades after the city gained official status in the 1990s.

The multipurpose structure is designed to support a wide range of activities, including city administration, government meetings, development conferences, educational programs, cultural events, civic engagements, and other major community gatherings.

With a seating capacity of more than 700 people, the facility is expected to serve as the county’s largest indoor public meeting space. The building also features two spacious administrative offices, a reception and waiting area, a secure storage room, two modern restroom facilities, a large front porch, and other amenities aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility.

The project was launched on April 26, 2025, when River Gee County Senator Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie officially broke ground for the construction, describing the initiative as a major investment in the future of Kanweaken and the county at large.

The City Hall project, valued at more than US$200,000, is among Senator Sogbie’s key infrastructure initiatives focused on improving local governance, expanding public facilities, and supporting sustainable community development.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Senator Sogbie emphasized that a growing commercial city requires a modern administrative center capable of meeting the needs of citizens, government officials, and development partners.

He said the project represents progress, accountability, and a commitment toward strengthening local institutions while creating better opportunities for public engagement.

The Kanweaken City Hall project forms part of a broader development agenda undertaken by Senator Sogbie across River Gee County. Other initiatives include the construction of the Youth Center in Kelipo Kanweaken, Chedebo Beletiken Town Hall, Gbeapo Sweaken Town Hall and Youth Center, along with several community town halls, road rehabilitation projects, internet connectivity expansion, and hand pump installations in rural communities.

Construction of the facility was awarded to Real Estate Builders, a Liberian-owned construction company responsible for executing the project according to approved engineering and construction standards.

For many years, Kanweaken lacked a dedicated City Hall despite its importance as River Gee’s commercial hub. Previous city administrations were forced to use schools and churches for official meetings and administrative activities, creating challenges for effective municipal operations.

Senator Jonathan Boycharles Sogbie, who also serves as Chairman of the County Legislative Caucus, was elected to the Liberian Senate in the 2020 Special Senatorial Election on the ticket of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), founded by Alexander B. Cummings.

As Liberia looks ahead to the 2029 General and Presidential Elections, Senator Sogbie is expected to seek another term to continue representing River Gee County at the national level.

Residents and local leaders say the completion of the modern City Hall will usher in a new chapter for Kanweaken by providing city officials with a professional workspace and creating a central location for public participation, planning, and community development.

When commissioned, the Kanweaken Modern City Hall is expected to stand as one of River Gee County’s notable infrastructure achievements, symbolizing institutional growth, improved governance, and the continued transformation of the county’s commercial capital.
