MONROVIA, Liberia — A new child nutrition initiative aimed at improving health outcomes during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life has been officially launched in Liberia under the “Enhancing Child Nutrition in Liberia’s First 1,000 Days Through Health and Nutrition Services” project.

The launch ceremony brought together key partners, including China’s Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, UNICEF Representative in Liberia Andrew Brooks, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ibrahim Al-bakri Nyei, and Assistant Minister of Health Dr. Cuallau Jabbeh Howe.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Yin described the initiative as a significant step in strengthening the China–Liberia strategic partnership and deepening practical cooperation in the health sector. He noted that the project reflects China’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, South–South collaboration, and the implementation of the Global Development Initiative.

He further emphasized that the program aligns with China’s people-centered development approach and reaffirmed Beijing’s readiness to work with UNICEF and other international partners to support Liberia in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing its ARREST development agenda.

Representatives from UNICEF and the Government of Liberia welcomed the initiative, expressing appreciation to China for its continued support. Mr. Brooks, Dr. Nyei, and Dr. Howe noted that the project is expected to improve maternal and child health services, strengthen nutrition outcomes, and enhance the physical and mental well-being of newborns across the country.

They also reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration with China and development partners to promote the welfare of women and children in Liberia.

The project is funded through the China Global Development and South–South Cooperation Fund and will be implemented by the UNICEF Country Office in Liberia in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other relevant institutions.
