MONROVIA, LIBERIA — Representative Zinnah A. Norman of Electoral District #1, Gbarpolu County, has distanced his office from allegedly disrespectful remarks attributed to his Chief Security Officer, Foster Toe, against prominent political leader Musa Hassan Bility on Facebook.
In a public statement issued Thursday, Norman said the remarks were made on Toe’s personal Facebook account and did not reflect his views, the position of his office, or its official policy.
The lawmaker described Bility as a respected statesman and political leader, emphasizing that political differences should not undermine civility, mutual respect, and responsible public discourse.
While acknowledging citizens’ right to freedom of expression, Norman stressed that such rights should be exercised responsibly, particularly when public statements could fuel political tension or division.
He said the language attributed to Toe was inconsistent with the standards of professionalism expected of personnel serving in a public office.
Norman also expressed regret over any offense or concern the remarks may have caused Bility, his family, supporters, and members of the Mandingo community. He reaffirmed his respect for the political leader and other citizens contributing to Liberia’s peace and democratic development.
The statement further clarified that staff members are not authorized to use personal opinions or social media engagements to represent the office without proper approval.
Norman called on staff, supporters, and well-wishers to exercise restraint in their public communications and avoid language that could create unnecessary political tension or misunderstanding.
He reaffirmed his office’s commitment to professionalism, respectful political engagement, and protecting the institution’s integrity.
