Africa Fire Mission Strengthens Liberia Firefighters’ Emergency Response Skills

MONROVIA, Liberia — The Africa Fire Mission (AFM) is conducting a series of intensive practical exercises for personnel of the Liberia National Fire Service (LNFS), as part of efforts to improve the country’s emergency response capacity.

The training, being held at the Liberia National Fire Service Training Academy in Bong Mine Bridge, Bushrod Island, is placing firefighters in simulated emergency situations designed to test and strengthen their operational skills.

Unlike classroom-based instruction, the practical sessions allow participants to work directly with firefighting equipment and apply response techniques under controlled conditions. The exercises focus on areas including fire suppression, emergency safety procedures, coordination, communication, teamwork and decision-making during potentially dangerous incidents.

The hands-on component is intended to help firefighters develop the confidence and discipline required to operate effectively during real emergencies, where rapid assessment, coordinated action and adherence to safety procedures can be critical to saving lives and limiting property damage.

AFM instructors are working with LNFS personnel through structured scenarios that require participants to respond as teams while observing established emergency protocols. The exercises also provide an opportunity for firefighters to identify operational challenges and strengthen their ability to function under pressure.

The training comes amid continued efforts to build the professional and technical capacity of Liberia’s emergency response institutions. For the LNFS, strengthening practical firefighting skills remains important as the service works to respond to fires and other emergencies in communities across the country.

The ongoing exercises are expected to contribute to improved preparedness among participating personnel by reinforcing both individual competencies and coordinated response capabilities.

The program is being conducted at the Liberia National Fire Service Training Academy, Bong Mine Bridge, Bushrod Island, Monrovia, with practical activities forming a central part of the training program.
