MONROVIA, Liberia — Gbokpayou Foundation Executive Director and 2029 District #1 Representative aspirant Gus Harris has strongly condemned the reported dismissal of road workers allegedly following a visit to their project site by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s son.
Harris described the reported action as unfair and unjust, arguing that the affected workers were allegedly given no prior information that the President’s son would visit the project.
He said the workers could have easily recognized the visitor and conducted themselves appropriately had they been informed ahead of time about his presence.
According to Harris, terminating workers over an incident they allegedly had no knowledge of sets a troubling precedent, particularly at a time when thousands of Liberians are struggling to find employment and provide for their families.
“Dismissing an individual for a situation he doesn’t know anything about is wrong, especially in this struggling economy where many citizens are struggling and looking for jobs for survival,” Harris stated.
He stressed that employment decisions should be based on facts, due process, and fairness, rather than assumptions or the influence and status of individuals involved.
Harris has therefore called for a transparent review of the reported dismissals, urging the relevant authorities to determine whether the workers were treated fairly and, if not, take corrective action.
He further warned that Liberia’s commitment to development must include the protection of workers’ dignity and livelihoods, emphasizing that no citizen should lose a job because of circumstances beyond their knowledge or control.
