Tubmanburg, Bomi County – More than 500 students from across the various districts of Bomi County on Monday commenced work under a four-day vacation job initiative spearheaded by Bomi County Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr., a program designed to provide temporary employment and financial assistance to students as they prepare for the start of the 2026/2027 academic year.
The students reported to their assigned locations in their respective districts, where they began carrying out designated tasks under the supervision of local coordinators. Throughout the four-day exercise, participants will work two hours each day before receiving a stipend of LRD 5,000 upon successful completion of the program.
The initiative is intended to ease some of the financial pressure faced by students and their families ahead of the reopening of schools. While the stipend is not expected to meet all educational expenses, it is aimed at helping beneficiaries purchase basic school supplies, including exercise books, pens, uniforms, and other essential learning materials.
The vacation job program also seeks to instill a sense of responsibility, discipline, and community service among participants by engaging them in productive activities during the school break. Supporters of the initiative say it offers students an opportunity to earn modest income through work while reinforcing the value of public service and civic engagement.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Senator Snowe said investing in young people remains one of the most meaningful ways to contribute to the future development of Bomi County and Liberia as a whole.
“There is always a special feeling that comes with being able to help, but it means even more to me when that support is directed toward schoolchildren and their education,” Senator Snowe said.
He acknowledged that the financial assistance may not be sufficient to meet every school-related expense but expressed hope that it would provide meaningful support as students prepare to return to the classroom.
“While the amount may not cover every school expense, I hope it can help with some of the basic things they will need as the new academic year approaches,” he added.
Several participating students welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention. They noted that the stipend would help them purchase essential school materials and reduce some of the financial burden on their parents and guardians ahead of the new school year.
The vacation job initiative forms part of Senator Snowe’s broader commitment to youth empowerment and educational support in Bomi County. Over the years, the senator has backed initiatives aimed at expanding educational opportunities and improving the welfare of young people across the county.
The four-day exercise is expected to conclude later this week, after which all participating students will receive their stipends. Many residents have praised the initiative as a practical intervention that combines temporary employment with educational assistance, particularly at a time when many families are preparing for the financial demands of the new academic year.
