MONROVIA — The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Morris Sheriff Foundation (MSF), Hon. Morris Sheriff, has launched what the organization describes as its largest anti-drug awareness campaign to date, bringing together hundreds of young people, community leaders, and elders in District #17, Montserrado County.
The campaign, held under the theme “Championing a Drug-Free Liberia: Unity, Action, and the Power of Community,” is aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and illicit substance trafficking while encouraging community participation in the fight against substance abuse.
According to the Foundation, more than US$40,000 was invested to organize the awareness campaign, while an additional L$1 million was committed to football and kickball tournaments designed to engage young people through sports and promote positive social interaction.
Speaking at the launch, Sheriff described drug abuse as one of Liberia’s most pressing national challenges, warning that it threatens the health, safety, and future of the country’s youth.
He said sports can serve as an effective tool for promoting unity, building resilience, and steering young people away from drugs and other harmful activities.
The Foundation noted that the District #17 campaign forms part of a broader anti-drug initiative that includes community awareness programs and outreach activities in Monrovia and other parts of the country.
Sheriff emphasized that addressing Liberia’s drug crisis requires a collective national effort involving government institutions, civil society organizations, community leaders, and citizens.
During the event, he commended civil society organizations and youth advocates for their continued efforts to combat drug abuse and promote rehabilitation. He also singled out human rights advocate Martin K. N. Kollie for what he described as his consistent advocacy on issues affecting young people and vulnerable communities.
The MSF Founder further praised the Government of Liberia for treating drug abuse as both a national security and public health concern, while acknowledging ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, and health authorities to combat drug trafficking and strengthen rehabilitation services.
Sheriff reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to expanding its anti-drug awareness campaigns across Liberia, stressing that sustained community engagement and collaboration remain essential to protecting the country’s youth from the dangers of substance abuse.
The Morris Sheriff Foundation said it intends to extend similar awareness activities to communities throughout the country as part of its campaign to promote a drug-free Liberia.
